Save15 Kaimanawa Horses from being aerial culled.

$47,711 of $50,000 goal
Given by 587 generous donors in 16 days

Save the 15 horses in the Ecological zones of the Kaimanawa Ranges from a certain death.

Nationwide

Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Welfare Society Inc. and Kaimanawa Legacy Foundation have combined to raise funds for this life saving mission. There are approximately 15 horses that are in the ecological zones which are out of the Kaimanawa Ranges horse management zones. It has been deemed necessary to remove these horse permanently before there is destruction of native plants and wetlands. KHH proposed using portable yards as the horses are approximately 25-35 km from the permanent yards. We have an offer of yards to use, we need to transport these to the area in the Ranges where they will be set up, have helicopters muster the horses in with stockmen and vets overseeing.

The horses would then be trucked to the Argo Valley yards and sorted into groups for trucking to trainers or directly to new homes. The alternative is aerial culling which we do not want to happen. KHH and KLF committee members will be there voluntarily, to ensure the horses get the best possible chance of getting out of the Ranges.

Please help us raise enough to get this rescue mission underway.

About us

Annually the population of wild Kaimanawa horses is reduced to 300 by aerial mustering. We search for suitable homes for these horses, rehoming as many as possible.

Use of funds

Muster costs - Stockmen, vets, moving portable yards, trucking and initial handling and training so that the horses can be rehomed.

We're Almost There!  13 July 2026

We're so close to reaching our fundraising target, and thanks to your incredible support, the muster to save these 15 horses is becoming a real possibility.

This week we'll be meeting with DoC to plan the operation. The use of portable stock yards will bring some new challenges, but it also creates exciting opportunities for smaller, more targeted musters in the future - helping us improve outcomes for Kaimanawa horses.

We're still accepting applications from experienced people interested in rehoming a muster horse. If you have the skills, knowledge, and facilities to provide a safe, lifelong home, you can download the application form from our website:

To every person who has donated, shared our campaign, or supported us in any way - thank you. Your generosity is making this rescue possible. Our committee is passionate about securing the best possible outcomes for these horses, and we are truly grateful to have you alongside us on this journey.

Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to giving these 15 horses the future they deserve.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
