96 College Road, Sanctuary, is the home of the Sanctuary Sounds music festival and the ministry of music open mic night. It has been a venue for the festival for 10 years now and open mic’s are held on the last friday of every month. Both the festival and the open mic operate as not-for-profits. Any funds collected go into strengthening the foundations of the event. Creating the Sanctuary Sounds Charitable Trust will ensure this continues to happen and that we can do even more for our community.

Sanctuary is not only the home of Sanctuary Sounds music festival, but it is also the home of Thelma Metcalfe. She is the mastermind behind the festival. She opens her home to hundreds of people every year and welcomes them with a smile and usually a delicious home cooked meal.

Sanctuary Sounds music festival draws a few hundred punters and dozens of bands. Bands come from all over the country to enjoy the festival, not because it will give them exposure, but because it is a truly grass roots experience and community event. The festival will always be small and hold its charm because the Sanctuary property is just that, a sanctuary.

It’s old trees and lush green rolling hills create an ideal place for people to gather. The back porch of the house is actually used as the main stage, again, bringing home the grass roots feel of a rural New Zealand festival.

The Sanctuary land is owned by the Te Aute trust and leased to Thelma for 21 year blocks. The new 21 year lease has just been approved.

Due to changes in Thelma’s life, a change in ownership of the home has to take place. So, it’s been decided the best course of action would be to purchase the house of Sanctuary Sounds music festival as a trust and begin moving towards our dream of creating a musicians and artists retreat!

As many things in life, we can’t do this alone. We are reaching out to all those that have enjoyed this little sanctuary and to those that have it on their bucket list! Whether you’ve come around for a cup of tea or you’ve been to the Sanctuary Sounds music festival, you’ll know the beauty that this place holds. The revolving door of travellers and locals, the late night jams around the fire, the stories told, the friends made, the open and relaxing environment, it is all worth saving!

The creation of the Sanctuary Sounds trust is already underway! What will it look like?

The Sanctuary Sounds Trust will establish and maintain an affordable creative community space in central Hawkes Bay where workshops, retreats, backpacker accomodation, festivals, concerts and exhibitions can take place.

What is the purpose of the trust?

-to maintain the property of 96 College road including land and buildings.

-to establish appropriate creative spaces to provide to the community.

-to provide creative spaces to youth at no cost.

-to provide a venue once a month for musicians at no cost (including lights, stage, full PA system, amps, etc).

-to seek and foster creativity in the community.

-to oversee the annual Sanctuary Sounds music festival.

The creation of the Sanctuary Sounds Trust is already underway. But what is a charitable trust?

entering a deed of trust, or

making a declaration

that certain property is to be applied in a particular way.

A person creating a trust while he or she is alive is called a 'settlor'. The persons entrusted with carrying out the wishes of the settlor are called 'trustees'. In family and other private arrangements, the persons who will benefit are called 'beneficiaries'. If someone declares publicly that they hold certain property for others, that person is equivalent to a trustee and those who will benefit are the beneficiaries. In all these – a Will, a deed of trust or a declaration – the beneficiaries might be named (for example, my children A and B) or might be identifiable by description (for example, my grandchildren living at the date of my death).

All trusts must make it clear what the purpose of the trust is, what property is the subject of the trust and who the trustees are to be.

What can a charitable trust do?

Charitable trusts are normally formed to undertake charitable activities and are less suitable for commercial activities. A charitable trust may make profits on their trading activities but the profits must be used for their charitable purposes and cannot be distributed to members.

A trust can operate in almost exactly the same way as an individual person can. A trust can hold property, raise mortgages, hold bank accounts and generally hold all types of assets and investments as long as it operates according to the powers set out in the trust deed.
