Support the Search for Shane

On Wednesday 8th February 2017, local and avid boatie, Shane Hayes, took his boat out for a quick test run. He launched from the Mangawhai Harbour - but did not return. Shane’s wife Laureen raised the alarm that evening, sparking an immediate search.

Coastguard rescue teams, NZ Police, family, friends and the wider community have continued to search over the past few days via land, sea, and air. Debris from Shane’s boat has been found, but not Shane.

United by the hope of finding Shane for this well-loved local family, an incredible display of community support has unfolded. Privately chartered helicopters, cropping planes, boaties and search parties have been extensively combing the area. Closure feels impossible for this special family, without his return.

Mangawhai’s community spirit has overwhelmed Laureen, daughter Jackie, and son Harrison. They are grateful beyond words. But the reality is – search efforts cost significant money.

It is important to point out that this give a little page is not a slight at the efforts undertaken by Coastguard, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, NZ Police and other volunteer rescue crews to date. However, these official channels have now been stood down - leaving the search efforts directly in the hands of Shane’s family and friends.
