Help us send HIV+ Kiwi teens to the Positive Teen Camps in Australia in 2015
Auckland
Every year since 2009 we have sent HIV+ kiwi teens across the ditch to attend the Positive Teen Camp in Australia. The teens that attend return energised with their confidence boosted.
There is no equivalent service available in New Zealand and we think that these camps provide a fundamentally positive part of what can be a chaotic and insecure time in anyone’s life.
The Torrens Fund was set up by Positive Women Inc. to fund this specific purpose. It was named in honour of Shirley Torrens who was a founding member of PWI in 1990 and has since passed away.
The Positive Kids Camps are an initiative of the Paediatric HIV Service at Sydney Children's Hospital. The aims of the camps are to:
Reduce the isolation experienced by these kids
Provide a recreational and therapeutic environment where teens can share experiences with others in a similar way
Teach new skills, increase confidence, and increase HIV knowledge, provide support and foster peer networks.
We need to raise $6,000 for the Torrens Fund to cover flights to Australia and back and other travel costs to the camp in 2015. They attend the camps for free.
Positive Women Inc. coordinates and funds HIV+ New Zealand teens to attend the Positive Teen Camp in Australia.
Positive Women provides a nationwide support network for women and families living with HIV in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We also deliver HIV education and prevention programmes to the wider community with a focus on eliminating HIV stigma and discrimination.
