Sgt Donald Forrester Brown VC life size bronze statue project
Help raise funds to place a life size bronze statue of Donald Forrester Brown VC in Oamaru CBD.
Oamaru, Otago
Educated in Oamaru and owned a farm in Totara. Don Brown sold his farm and gave away his horse and dog before enlisting with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 10th North Otago Company during WW1.
His courage and leadership are legendary. He was the first New Zealander to be awarded the Victoria Cross on the Western Front. On his own he destroyed or captured several German machine gun posts in the battle of the Somme. Don was also an inspiration to his men and kept them calm during a heavy bombardment. He was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross
NZRA Waitaki would like to install a life size bronze statue to honour and remember his deeds. It has been designed and will be sculptured by Matt Gauldie a renowned artist
Use of funds
The money will be spent on the concept drawings, manufacturing and placement of the bronze, sculptured by artist Matt Gauldie. If there is a shortfall the bronze will be reduced in size or minuets produced to place in the community.
