my brave young20 y ear old daughter has been diagnosed with rare ovarian cancer - please follow our journey as we try to beat this cancer!

Auckland

Two weeks ago our world got turned upside down when after 6 months of being in and out of the GP's my 19 year old daughter finally got sent for a scan of her stomach where they discovered a massive tumor. We were told by our GP to wait for a referral but as a mum I knew something was really wrong and the next day took her to the Middlemore Hospital Emergency Department. We were so lucky that day because the best surgeon happened to be rostered on. She took one look at my daughters medical records and took her straight into surgery where they removed my daughters left ovary (which had ruptured) and Fallopian tube - she was diagnosed with stage three Ovarian cancer. Since then it has been a whirlwind of CT scans, blood tests, x-rays, hospital stays and now the journey of Chemotherapy. Not how she expected to be celebrating her birthday that's for sure. Because the pathology showed the cancer had spread microscopically Shannon now has to undergo 12 weeks of intense Chemotherapy at Auckland Hospital. For her first week of chemo, Shannon started off great the first two days but has really struggled since then with nausea and sadly got sick the first day out of hospital. My beautiful daughter has gone from being a fit, self employed personal trainer working every hour available - to struggling to get off the couch and so sick it's hard to function. To beat her cancer, Shannon will be unable to work for the next 6 months. It has been a new journey of discovering what is involved with having cancer and we now understand what people with Cancer have to battle - not only the disease but so many unexpected expenses that come with it. There are multiple hospital visits, special diets to by food for, hospital car parking, wig, medications, emergency visits to A&E to name just a few. As a mum I am trying my best - I still work full-time while juggling Shannons treatments and will need to continue to do so but we are struggling. Shannon has been incredible - her positive attitude has already inspired so many (her story can be seen on instagram @shannonmenger.pt). She is determined to beat this and I am determined to do all I can to help her - she is so young, she is my daughter and I love her so much. Give-a-little is not something I would do but my sister has said I should. If you have read this and you are able to help we will be so very grateful. I hope you get to see Shannon's story on Instagram and who knows, down the track meet her in person. She is an amazing young lady and I am very proud of the person she has become.

I'm Tracey, Shannon's mum who hasn't left her side and is helping her through this toughest of times for us both - I so wish I could switch places with her! no one wants to see their baby go through this hell

Use of funds

Money will be spent paying Shannon's bills while she is unable to work: prescriptions for multiple drugs, course fees, car insurance, petrol and parking for cancer appts, food cravings whilst nauseous! wig, beanies, and whatever else is thrown at us!

Half way there! End of chemo cycle two!   17 May 2019

It’s been 3 weeks since my last update, sorry for the delay but it just means we had a pretty good and uneventful cycle two thankfully- a few speed bumps with reflux but the nausea was better and no ED trips this time round (I did plan ahead and buy an inflatable mattress just Incase that is now a permanent fixture in my car!) so thankful that I haven’t needed it! So very thankful to all our fabulous friends being there again with dinners and support mentally and practically - sharon Lynch, my neighbor Glenyse with lovely aromatherapy, the fab Crystal Robb and Rodney from crush fit coming around with their amazing dinner and dessert - so need that dessert recipe crystal! As well as the gorgeous gifts and donations from their fundraiser xx Loved the offers of support from our CG boot camp leader Leon Heikell and his gorgeous wife Varnier Heikell xx I promise I’ll catch up as soon as I have a day that I’m not working or at chemo xx and Sandy James for her reiki that instantly cured the vomiting and reflux and nausea not just once but twice for Shan and gave me a great week of sleep after having insomnia for years! This finally finally got me into a place where I could think about putting my complaint in about our gp and make a move to enroll us both with a new one that hopefully we can trust - time will tell and I’m not likely to take substandard treatment ever again so I hope they’re up for the challenge! As for our progress with the cancer- we are half way through as of Sunday so only 6 weeks to go and the 3 tumour markers are normal to almost normal so we are on the right track to a complete cure according to the drs on Wednesday!! woop woop!! Just need to manage the chemo side effects and low iron count for the next two cycles and we’re hopefully back to a different but more normal life! It’ll be a long road before this momma shark (Thanks for that title gene and Marie lol) feels comfortable with her health and GP care but it’s been a wake up call for us all to not put off tests, or to let our GPs make us feel like we are hypochondriacs as sometimes- IT MIGHT JUST BE CANCER!
