I’m sure many of you remember when the Ebola epidemic hit West Africa in 2013, devastating many families, but did you know that there is currently an Ebola epidemic running rampant in the Democratic Republic of Congo that is taking lives every day? Literally every day people are dying from this. You would be amazed at how many of these major epidemics fly completely under our radar and get little support because they don’t involve our Western countries directly.

The world is a brutal place man, and I think we could be doing much better to help these countries. A lot of this harm comes about because of a lack of resources in these countries, whether that be lack of access to medicines and treatments, lack of health facilities, but particularly there is a shortage of healthcare workers to care for the people. In NZ there is roughly 1 doctor for every 300 people, whereas in these countries there is roughly 1 doctor for every 50,000 people!!!

Hello, my name is Jack Sinclair. I am a medical student based in Christchurch in my 4th year of study. I have been growing my hair since I started university and I've decided to shave it all off to raise money for a cause I'm passionate about.

So there is this organisation called Medic To Medic that financially aids healthcare students in Africa with their course costs to help address the massive shortage of healthcare workers in these countries. This prevents them from dropping out of training due to the extreme poverty. More healthcare workers means more access to healthcare for the public. What’s really cool about them is that they work directly with the universities and students, so the money goes exactly where it needs to be rather than being passed through other organisations that take a some of the money off the top for themselves.
