Kiwi volunteering for the Baptist Mission in Sierra Leone needs assistance with funding to build the security fence for the school.

Canterbury

Sierra Leone, West Africa. Emerging from the heavily populated city of Freetown, out from within the slums and extreme poverty that has held this country down for so long, you begin to wonder if there is any hope for those living within this war torn place.

Until you get to a place where the houses seem to spread out a little and patches of green and high hillsides begin to appear, it seems a little more pleasant here and then all of a sudden your standing within the grounds of our favorite Baptist Mission. It is here that hope can be found. Big smiles, bright children and a strong team of adults giving there all to educate and maintain a pillar of strength in the community.

Security in Sierra Leone is always tested no matter when or where. Just recently the school was broken into at night and thirty five plastic chairs were stolen at an estimated $500 US dollars. This is not at all uncommon in S.L and for most schools and churches the only solution is to leave nothing of value on school / church grounds outside of working hours. As the Baptist mission continues to grow and new equipment is delivered this option is fast becoming unrealistic and even with a security guard working outside of normal work hours the school / church is still vulnerable and can even be a danger zone if the wrong type of intruders decided to target the mission.

With the total number of students nearing the 370 mark, a computing lab set to be installed over the next year and the community church reaching out more than ever into the local community, we really need your help to improve security on our grounds. Please consider helping with the materials for a fence that would secure school property and create a safer environment for students and members of the community. The fence will be 200 meters around the entire boundary and made out of concrete block with steel gates and security wire. It will have concrete pillars on corners and at intermediate stages. If we do not achieve the full amount of the fundraising target we will use what money there is to build a section or a number of sections depending on the amount given.

For all those interested, further details can be provided regarding location, structure of the mission, accountability and any other question you may have.

Another shot here. About a couple of hours after this and we'd basically cleared all the lines ready for the fence.
