Helping my mum, Sooleola, and our family fight Stage 3C cancer, a fight that no family should ever need to go through #SooleolaCanBeatCancer
Auckland
My mum is the embodiment of a strong woman – a mum of 4 and now a grandmother of 5. She has always been active, selfless, loves God, and always puts others before herself. In the midst of celebrating the arrival of her newest granddaughter here in NZ, the news of cancer came so sudden & threw our life into turmoil.
What started to be a nagging pain in her lower abdomen and back, in September 2020, has turned into the most dreadful diagnosis of stage 3C uterine cancer. 2 months of constant visits to the doctors, hospital & specialists, countless scans and tests revealed a 15cm cancerous tumour in Mum’s uterus, creeping into her lymph nodes. Holding my seven-month-old, I held back tears at the gynaecologist’s clinic, trying to come to terms with her diagnosis: an aggressive fast-spreading cancer that needs urgent surgery to remove all reproductive organs following radiation therapy.
The cancer fight is hard on anyone and any family, treatments are aggressive to not just the tumour but also the body. We want to start treatments as soon as possible to give Mum the best fighting chance but funding is a huge roadblock for our family at the moment. Coming from Samoa to NZ on a visitor visa, she is not eligible for any government funding and Auckland hospital requires a big lump sum deposit to even schedule her surgery.
Growing up, my mum would do anything to help others regardless of how much she has and how little she knows the person. She stopped at nothing to provide for her kids and my childhood was filled with love. She made many sacrifices in her own life to give us a better start in life; yet in her time of needs, I am unable to fund life-saving medical care for her. This shatters me. Our family is down to 1 income with me on maternity leave & we are just keeping afloat financially as it is.
We need your URGENT help and support in our family’s journey to beat cancer. We are forever thankful for your kindness as we frantically try to organise funds for Mum’s treatment. The tumour is like a ticking bomb, it keeps growing and spreading day by day so we cannot afford any delay. We appreciate your generosity, however small, every little bit immensely helps us.
Thank you so much for caring and may the Lord bring you blessings and love.
The funds will be utilized to pay for the Surgery, Radiation therapy, Scans, X-rays
Update on Sooleola 11 March 2021
Hi everyone,
We first want to thank everyone for their support, prayers and generosity during our journey for our mum to beat cancer. Sooleola had a follow up appointment in January to discuss further treatment options. Doctor's have advised due to the aggressive cancer she has, she will require to do both Radiation therapy and Chemotherapy and the cost of this would be $50,000 which would need to be paid upfront. She has taken a lot of time to decide and after months of thinking she has decided to enjoy the quality of life rather than quantity; therefore she won't be having any further treatments. We have amended our goal to match the invoices received from the hospital.
We are forever grateful for all your prayers, love, support and generosity that my mum was able to have her surgery and enjoy the quality of life that she has with us.
Much love from our family and God Bless
