Canterbury

St Mark's Anglican Church has been a part of the Opawa community since 1865.

In 1953 we built the current church after a fire destroyed the last one. In 2020 we are going to repair and improve it after earthquake damage. We're looking forward to once more serving our community, our school, and our God from this beautiful church.

A repaired and refreshed church will allow us to be...

- A place of contemplation, worship, prayer, and awe

- A gift to St Mark's School students

- A vibrant community hub with space for groups and individuals

- A space to mark life's milestones with baptisms, weddings, and funerals

The Parish of Opawa-St Martins is looking to repair the church in two stages.

In the first stage we will repair and strengthen the existing building, including the bell tower, and create a new St Anne's Chapel in the North Transcept. We will also replace the roof over the foyer, lounge, and hall to make the space more usable for community groups. The lighting and heating will also get an upgrade.

In the second stage we hope to redesign the entranceway, toilets, office, and install a sprinkler system to allow more people to enjoy the space, lifting capacity from 230 to 299.
