Please help us wrap around this family and give Magnus the opportunity to be the big brother that he deserves to be.
Wellington
Magnus is a super happy, bubbly 2 year old that is just about to become a big brother with a life time of dreams ahead of him, when last month his family was delivered the devastating news that he has a 9cm neuroblastoma growing from his right kidney area which has spread to other areas of his body.
This amazing family are now navigating the fact that their toddler has stage four neuroblastoma which is an aggressive and rare form of childhood cancer, 38% survival rate. There are only about 12-20 children diagnosed with this cancer in NZ every year. The most innovative treatments (e.g. Proton therapy) and some promising drugs are overseas and very expensive.
Treatments here in NZ include, intensive chemo, radiation therapy, stem cell transplants, surgery and immuno therapy. Generally all these treatments can have severe and long lasting side effects which can include hearing or vision loss, organ damage, or developing secondary cancers or leukemia at any time.
Magnus and his family would love to be able to explore overseas treatment options, buy products for Magnus that will enhance his comfort and recovery. As well as be able to organise support to be with them throughout the treatments, and when their second baby joins the family in April 2025.
Please help us wrap around this family and give Magnus the opportunity to be the big brother that he deserves to be.
We are the Childspace community that surround Magnus and his whānau.
The money will be used for products and treatments that will ease his pain and enhance his comfort throughout treatment. These include a dry suit (as he will need a Hickman line) this will allow him to enjoy waterplay safely, red light mat to support his healing, and other supplements that are proven to inhibit tumour growth. As well as looking into overseas options for expert neuroblastoma surgery and treatments that suggest a higher success outcome (page will be updated once decided).
Finishing Cycle #2 11 January 2025
Hello from Wellington to all our amazing supporters.
In the last update we were half way through Chemo Round 2 in Christchurch, which, overall, went as well as it could. Magnus had a bit more nausea than before and on day 4 and 5 he was desperate to leave and did not want the chemo connected to him.
They sent us home on day 6 after chemo start and we've enjoyed some nice home time with a very happy child, and really bad weather.
Then came the sunny days on Thursday and Friday but as life sometimes goes, these were unexpectedly spent in Wellington hospital, starting with rushing to ED at 4am with Magnus having a fever of 39 degrees.
The child cancer protocol plays on the very safe side in case it's caused by bacteria and they kept us three days until today. Blood tests, transfusions, and IV antibiotics every 6 hours as a precaution were on the program. Suffice to say we're all very relieved that they discharged us today midday!
Next visit on Tuesday for a dressing change and blood test.
We still have a very long journey ahead of us and a long way to go to reach the funds we need to be able to have choices and options for better treatments and technology. Thank you so very much for being on the journey with us so far. Please keep spreading the word so Magnus can receive the best care for this beast. ❤️🩹
Lots of love
Arohanui
Magnus, Diana and Mario
