A community movement with a vision to transform the Christchurch Avon River Red Zone into a city to sea native forest and wetland park.
Canterbury
Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park developed to conceptualise, promote and actively encourage the development of an indigenous forest and wetland park in land cleared of residential housing after the Canterbury Earthquakes. This land is still frequently referred to as the Red Zone or more accurately as the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.
We are an action focused group with 9 project sites in the red zone and two Christchurch City Council parks that we are restoring by either encouraging existing indigenous vegetation to re-establish or by actively planting indigenous plants.
Both the committee and volunteers contribute their time on an unpaid basis. For our projects we are dependent entirely on donations or grants to buy plants, mulch, tools, plant guards and weed mats.
We have 2 new and exciting projects we are seeking funding for, these are:
Dallington Terrace: We have secured an extension to the size of our lease and we would like to prepare the land for future planting. This requires improving soil condition through mulching the soil. We have been quoted as $1155 for compost. We are also looking to raise $896 for native plants, $520 for plant guards, $338 for 2 wheel barrows and $69 for a mulching fork. For this project site we are seeking $2913 in total.
Cowlishaw Street: We have also secured an extension to the size of our lease at this site and would like to prepare it the site for future planting as we will with our Dallington site. This will require an additional $1155 for compost. We are also seeking $724.5 for plants, $416 for plant guards, $338 for 2 wheel barrows and $69 for a mulching fork. For this site we are seeking $2637.5 of additional funding.
We appreciate any donations towards helping us create a forest and wetland park in the Ōtākaro - Avon River Corridor.
Any funds raised will go towards the purchase of plants to be planted by our Volunteers
Support for Red Zone Biodiversity Projects 30 March 2021
We're always on the lookout for support for our projects throughout the Red Zone. We look after 10 sites in the Red Zone - planting new sites and maintaining existing sites and nurturing natural regeneration. Our aim: to provide a natural habitat to support local biodiversity in Christchurch.
