To support John and Avonstour Island through a difficult season due to the violent attack he suffered at the beginning of the year
Taranaki
It is not everyday as a community we get to give back to someone who has given so much.
John Earney is a kauri in the bush, a pillar of the organic rarebreed movement, an essential contributor as an organiser and stall holder of the Taranaki Farmers Market. A mover & shaker (that includes dancing ), an activist for the preservation of heirloom breeds and a steward of the soil. Someone whose passion is the land and bringing people together to learn from it.
Our friend John has been through a huge trauma, so savagely attacked it has left those that love him in shock. There have been many ripple effects from this attack which he speaks of in this article https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/104276412/disgruntled-ex-runs-down-fatherinlaw-punches-and-stomps-him but one of the biggest for John is not being able to work on Avonstour Island, his farm. Not being able to be on the land due to his injuries has meant paying for work to be done which he would normally do himself. Money going out but not coming in. To cover costs John is having to sell some of his prized rarebreed stock which is an absolute tragedy, these creatures are irreplacable, a testament to his knowledge and passion. The most profitable time of the farming year has passed and savings are being used to cover farming expenses. The farm is everything to John and an example to everybody else that powerful things can come in small packages, that big isn't always better.
As his community and for any keen social investors it is important for us to step up and help. John is looking to the future, wanting to do what he loves, working on Avonstour and educating people on how to reconnect and live off the land. Our part is to take some responsibility in helping this happen, to try and take some of the financial burden off johns shoulders so he can move forward, bring his mission into fruition and through this work, heal!
I am a friend of Johns, a member of his wide community and a huge supporter of the work he does for us all.
Funds will be used as John sees fit on Avonstour or however he needs it
