In February 2015 a tragic car accident has left 2 year old Benjamin Murphy facing extensive rehabilitation in Auckland away from home.
Nelson / Tasman
Benjamin is a 2 year old boy who was tragically hit by a car in Nelson on the 9th February this year. It happened in the most typical yet unfortunate of circumstances – the type of accident every parent fears. He was initially transferred to Christchurch for treatment of a brain bleed and fractured femur and returned to Nelson for rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, it was discovered that he had a spinal cord injury and might not regain the use of his legs and also risks losing the use of his arms. He was transferred to Starship Hospital and has recently undergone further surgery to fuse his cervical vertebrae to the base of his skull to prevent further disability.
Benjamin is the youngest child of a loving family; his parents Beth, Simon, older sister Michaela, and older brother, Kees. This is understandably a challenging time for everyone and one of the aims of this page is to provide financial support to help the family be together while Benjamin recovers in Starship hospital and undergoes an intensive 9 weeks of rehabilitation at the Wilson Centre in Auckland.
When the family are finally reunited again in Nelson there will be ongoing costs to his care beyond those provided by our public health system.
All funds raised will go towards assisting Benjamin and his family throughout this stage of recovery and rehabilitation, beyond this we hope to assist Benjamin’s future health needs and ensure he has access to appropriate support and aids available.
Beth and Simon would like to thank everyone for the love and support they have received during this difficult time and are positive about the future.
Benjamin and his family are a large part of our community in Nelson. They have supported others and now we wish to help them during this time
