Small steps at a time for development and recovery for Leuka.
Manawatu / Whanganui
Leuka lives in Wanganui with his Mum, Step father and Brother. During the school holidays he went to stay with his Dad, Stepmother and Brothers in Christchurch.
On October 3rd he went with his Dad and family to an activity centre.
Unfortunately while there he had an accident and his spinal cord was badly damaged.
Leuka is currently in Christchurch hospital ICU he will remain here until he is stable enough to be transferred to Burwood spinal hospital, where he and his family will work on learning how to support Leuka with his spinal injury, and Leuka will undergo rehabilitation to help with recovery, to be the best that he can be.
Leukas Dad, Stepmother and brothers are currently based in Christchurch, and will support Leuka at this time.
leukas Mum, stepfather, brothers, family and friends live in Wanganui also play a key role in leukas support and recovery.
As they are based in Wanganui they are faced with the reality of having to take extended leave from work, costs associated with flights, accomodation, back and forth to Christchurch over the next several months so they can be of support to Leuka while he is Burwood spinal hospital.
We would like to help raise funds to assist with these costs and to relieve some of the financial stress.
Leuka turned 16 on the 20th October. He is a vibrant kind and thoughtful young man who always looks out for others. He loves music motorbikes hockey and playstation, his family, and spending time with his friends
Any donations would be so appreciated.
Leuka's rehabilitation update 3 December 2016
Week 8 update for Leuka Coffey. Thought we would do a update on Lukes time here in Burwood spinal unit. Overall he is doing great at working towards getting off the ventilator. Leuka has been weaning off it and his time increases every two days when he has been successful. At present he has progressed to 4 hrs twice a day he's able to use a speaking valve so we can hear him talk which has been so good, as he has plenty to say....Leuka says he is looking forward to getting over this hurdle, and into the gym to begin rehab. Thanks everyone who continues to send messages of love and support.
