Our cat Sylvia needs chemotherapy to save her life.

Auckland

Hey if you are reading this then you have clicked on our page link... thanks!

We are Nikki and Karl Adam and we love cats! Recently our amazing beautiful cat Sylvia has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Sylvia is a member of our family and is very important to us - we are absolutely devastated by this news. Without treatment, most cats only get on average a few months to live. Because Syliva has always been there for us, we want to be there for her and give her a fighting chance.

Syliva is an SPCA rescue and an amputee. Her back right leg was badly injured when the SPCA took her in therefore she has already had quite a difficult life before our adoption. Despite this, Sylvia is a really sweet, loving, and affectionate cat.

Around two weeks ago we found a lump next to her amputation stump. We immediately called our local vet and booked her in to be seen. They checked the lump and prepared us for the fact that it was not just a cyst or abscess as we had hoped. We decided to book her in immediately for a lumpectomy and we are really glad we did. A few days after the operation we got the upsetting news that her lump was, sadly, Lymphoma and we were referred to a specialist where we were given our options. Steroids can slightly extend her lifespan, but not by very much. Chemotherapy has a good shot at giving her a few more good years and even a small, but not insignificant chance to cure it entirely.

We have opted to go down the Chemotherapy path and she has already had her first course today (07/04) and is recovering well. All up, Sylvia needs to have about 12 chemotherapy sessions to beat this awful disease. Of course, we want to do everything we can to help such a sweet awesome cat who has given us so much and not lose her due to lack of funds, which is why we need your help.

Chemo sessions cost around $600 per session and Sylvia needs to have them weekly for the next 4 to 6 weeks, and then every fortnight until she has received 28 weeks of treatment altogether. We do have pet insurance but sadly it only covers her surgery and not her cancer treatment. Treating Sylvia and giving her the life she deserves is going to cost between $7000 and $9000 just for the chemotherapy and we believe she deserves the best care she can get. We want Sylvia to be around for as long as possible and we can't imagine our lives without her.

And lastly, I know this is long but a little bit about us and how we got Sylvia in the first place:

Karl and I have been fostering cats for the SPCA since 2013. We have saved literally hundreds of cats' lives by taking them into our home and giving them our time and energy and a warm safe place to stay in. Sometimes we have even given them our blood, sweat, and tears, too! Sylvia was our first ever foster cat and we immediately fell in love with her. She has huge gorgeous eyes and she always looks like she is smiling. She doesn't let her lack of a back leggy get in her way of enjoying life! We knew that as soon as she entered our lives we had to keep her. Karl and I have devoted the last 8 years of our lives helping out sick or injured cats and now sadly we need a little bit of help. We HATE that we have to ask and it makes us feel sick to our stomachs to have to do so, but we have to swallow our pride for lil Sylvie because she's worth it.

We are just asking for anything you can spare. Every little bit is going to help us and if you can't afford to dip into your wallets at this time, as I know a lot of people are struggling at the moment, please just share our link and get it seen by as many people as possible. We are happy to provide receipts and invoices if they are requested too. Thanks so much for reading our novel!

P.S we will also accept hugs and kisses from you to Sylvia! Just let us know and we will give her one from you if you request it!

Use of funds

The main use of the funds will be vet appointment bills and regular chemotherapy treatment sessions for Sylvia our tuxedo cat. These funds will only be used for Sylvia and if we have anything left over we will donate it to the Auckland SPCA.

Second update on Sylvia  5 May 2021

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give you all another update on how our beatiful Sylvia is doing!

She has now had four chemo sessions! She is so brave and doesn't even cry in the car when we take her for her sessions, even though it is a 45 minute trip when traffic is bad. She had to have a two week break between sessions as she sadly developed a pretty nasty cold as her immunities are not the best right now, so she needed time to recover before she could start the sessions again.

Unfortunately now she has developed a leaky butt! The vet says this is because the chemo has affected the bacteria in her belly so she is now on medication for that also. It makes me sad because I haven't been able to give her a cuddle for a few days for fear of getting poop on me. I hope she feels better soon!

Sylvia now gets a two week break until her next chemo session which is good because it gives her time to feel a bit normal again for a few days before being getting back to it.

One last thing as I know this is getting long: Karl and I are having a garage sale on Saturday May 8th to raise funds for Sylvias treatment. It will go from 8am to 12.30pm and we are located in Swanson, West Auckland. Please send me a message if you want the address!

Thanks for caring everyone.

Love from Nikki, Karl, and cat family.
