Canterbury
The Ōtākaro Orchard is a collaboration of 40+ organizations to create a hub for local food in the heart of Christchurch. Our 1/2 acre site includes a public food forest, community amphitheatre, and an exemplar sustainable building featuring a social enterprise cafe, HQ for the Food Resilience Network, & a venue for community & public use. As the only community-led anchor project of the Christchurch rebuild, the project is a rare partnership between grassroots community, local & national government, and the private sector to create a 100-year public asset on the banks of Ōtākaro/Avon river.
With design input from over 100 people in Christchurch, help from 380 volunteers, and contributions from 550 Cantabrians, we're raised over $1,000,000 in cash and 350K in-kind from over 42 businesses, we've planted our food forest, submitted building consent, and have entered the final phase of the project! Over the coming months, we need to raise $500,000 to deliver the Ōtākaro Orchard in it's entirety.
Help us bring this project home!
The Food Resilience Network is working to form a patchwork of food producing initiatives based around local hotspots and linked together like a ribbon woven into the fabric of our communities. We are a collaborative of 30+ organizations here in Christchurch/Canterbury working on different facets of a thriving local food system.
All funds raised here go directly to the Ōtākaro Orchard project, to complete the landscape, building, & other essential costs.
