Te Kete Whāngai ō Kaipara

$2,387 of $2,100 goal
Given by 59 generous donors in 5 weeks

Free meals for families with newborns - nourishing the South Kaipara community from the very beginning.

Auckland

Te Kete Whāngai ō Kaipara is about providing nourishment to local families in the early days by providing three frozen meals - enough for four servings per meal - as they leave the Helensville Birthing Centre.

That could mean around 410 meals for 140 South Kaipara families with newborns each year.

In November 2018 we asked the local community to raise $2100 to get the first Cookathon underway.

And you proved that Helensville is a small town with a big heart - helping us exceed our goal.

In 2019 we will look to expand the service to provide meals for the elderly, the unwell and families in crisis.

So, your ongoing support through a donation to this Givealittle page will help us continue our goal of nourishing the South Kaipara community, from the very beginning.

About us

The Helensville District Health Trust (HDHT) is a charitable trust which is well respected for its innovative and enterprising integrated rural health model.

Its vision is "the best possible health services for the people of South Kaipara."

The Trust was formed in 1989 in response to the impending closure of Helensville's local maternity hospital.

The community-led initiative pioneered New Zealand's first Birthing Unit, which remains at the forefront of maternity care in this country and around the world.

Since 2013 HDHT has also been a part shareholder of the Kaipara Medical Centre along with Waitemata District Health Board and long-serving local doctors.

The Trust's impact on the health and wellbeing of the community grew again in 2015 when it was gifted the old Parakai Tavern and redeveloped the site into Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai.

The community centre, with a commercial grade kitchen, plays host to a number of events and educational courses and acts as a "house of well-being" for the people of South Kaipara.

Use of funds

The money raised will cover the costs of the first Te Kete Whāngai ō Kaipara Cook-A-Thon involving volunteers led by the professional kitchen team at Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai. It'll cover the costs of ingredients, packaging and kitchen needs.
