Te Toki Voyaging Trust - Help From Home 5

$23,395 of $23,000 goal

Revitalising waka culture in the Pacific.

Waikato

Our aim is to raise funds for a set of new sails for Haunui and new stays and shrouds for Hinemoana. The total costs are $28k however, we have secured $10k match funding which leaves $18k to be raised. Every donation up to $10k will be doubled by Foundation North and any dollar we raise on top of the $18k we will dedicate to rangatahi. For every additional $5k, we will take 10 rangatahi on a two day voyage which could be life changing for them.

The need for our young people and communities to strengthen their cultural connection, learning about their ancestors, and experiencing traditional leadership skills to build their resiliance has only been increased by the pandemic. Our rangatahi need us. The impact on their mental health and physical fitness has been huge and we are working to ensure that our waka are safe and in the best possible condition in order to engage with and educate rangatahi from our communities in the Waikato and Tamaki Makaurau.

Haunui’s current set of sails are close to eight years old, nd over those many years his sails have seen a lot of miles and the age is showing through. Hinemoana's shrouds and stays are the same and due for replacement.

The replacement of gear is needed to ensure we are safe and have best possible equipment when we are sailing in rougher weather. Our commitment is that if we are able to raise the fund for sails, shrouds and stays, we invest any amount above into overnight voyages with rangatahi.

About us

Te Toki Voyaging Trust (TTVT) was established over 30 years ago through the vision and leadership of waka expert, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr. Since its inception, the Trust has built up one of the most successful and internationally recognised waka ama clubs, a training fleet of small sailing canoes, and owns and operates three Waka Hourua (double-hulled voyaging canoes) Haunui, Hinemoana and Aotearoa One. Two of the waka hourua are located in Auckland and one is located in Kawhia (Waikato). TTVT Waka Hourua also runs education programmes using the waka hourua, a Land-rig (Ngā papa Rā), Star Compass (Kāpehu Whetū) and Stardome (Whare Whetū) with schools and communities.

Our programmes have been developed by Educator and Master navigator Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr (CNZM for services to Māori and heritage commemoration) and are rich with matauranga, STEM learning, leadership and experiential practises. Waka is the vehicle by which these learning experiences can take place. Hoturoa is an esteemed Tohunga Ahurewa from Kaawhia and Tahaaroa so the translation of the programmes to his tuurangawaewae offer great depth, specificity and relevance for the tamariki in Kaawhia moana and Aotearoa.

TTVT has developed from strength to strength based on the foundational values of aroha, whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga. These are the values we teach and base our programmes on.

Use of funds

Our aim is to raise funds for a set of new sails for Haunui and new stays and shrouds for Hinemoana and support to take rangatahi for overnight voyages.
