Help fund palliative care for Stephen (SJE) in Zimbabwe

$5,820 of $20,000 goal
Given by 44 generous donors in around 6 months

Urgent funds required for palliative care for Stephen (SJE) who is battling a terminal cancer diagnosis in Zimbabwe.

Northland

A diagnosis of two brain tumours and two lung tumours is devastating. Stephen (SJE), is facing the enormous challenge of this terminal diagnosis in Zimbabwe, a country with no social welfare, no medical support, unemployment at 95%, and hyperinflation. He has rapidly become incapacitated by the cancer, and the doctors talk of months to live. We his family and friends scattered around the world have been left with no alternative but to ask for your help.

In his life, SJE has been, a writer, published author, a musician, and a man recognised for his huge knowledge of the African bush. He famously spent 6 months canoeing the mighty Zambezi River from source to mouth during some of Southern Africa’s most turbulent years (reference his book Zambezi Odyssey), long before canoe safaris became the must do African adventure. In later years he continued to explore and write about his beloved southern Africa, her waterways, and unmapped places.

Like many older Zimbabweans, he has found himself in increasingly difficult circumstances over the last few years, he has had no regular income for some time, and now this devastating blow. Family and friends have always been important to him, over the years he took a few mates under his wing, believing always that time in the bush could fix anything! But, time in the bush is not going to fix this. He is our uncle, cousin and friend and we want very much to make sure his last journey is one of comfort and dignity.

If you are able to assist in any way with a donation, it would ease the burden of care hugely for all involved. Money raised through this page would be used to cover expenses such as living expenses, medical bills, and palliative care, and funeral costs.

I am part of a core group of family and friends calling ourselves Team SJE. Stephen is my uncle. Our wish is for him to receive the standard of care anyone with cancer and a terminal diagnosis deserves. Others in TeamSJE are Janine Coetzee & Avril Edwards in Cape Town, Lauren Edwards in UK, Trish Hougaard in Zimbabwe and me in New Zealand. Thank you for your help.

Use of funds

Funds raised will be used to support Stephen, with no income, medical aid or governments support, things are very tough in Zimbabwe, this money will help us take care of him.

Goodbye to Stephen.xox  18 September 2017

Our news is bittersweet. Today Monday 18th 2017 just after midnight, our beloved Stephen passed away. Bitter- because we did not want to lose him, not so soon, not in such a cruel way, and with so much left to do this side of life. Sweet, because we had him, for 68 years and he brought much to our lives, and because FINALLY, he has been released from his broken body! The last two weeks in Zimbabwe we saw a swift deterioration in his already severely affected health, it was unbearable to watch, made all the worse because we knew the physicality and the nature of the man he had been. To everyone who contributed to the fundraising efforts please know that because of you we could support his end of life care with 24 hour nurse care, medications and pain killers to ease his discomfort, access to resources such as a specialised mattress and cushion to ease his painfully thin frame, and finally a funeral plan, simple, as he wished, but everything taken care of. Thank you for all your kind support, it really has made a difference. Any questions or messages can be sent to Teamsje@gmail.com. Many thanks. We will update on here regarding a low key gathering in his memory, and future plans to place his ashes with his dad, mum, nephew and brother in the Zambezi Valley.

I worked WITH Steve (half of the "Valvie" brothers double act! Vale NED!) in early '80's when he ran the BEU out of Chiredzi. I have always been in awe of his toughness and bush skills and eloquence when swearing at whomsoever was "lucky" enough to incur his wrath. Hope this helps,Peter Trembath
