Temporary could not work (no income) due to sickness and need to pay mortgage and living expenses.

I am a New Zealand citizen, aged 56 and sole breadwinner. Lived and worked (pay taxes) in NZ for 13 years and had never go on benefits in my life. In my previous minor operation, I had used up the medical and annual leave. Unfortunately, I had no income (on unpaid leave) since my major abdominal surgery on 20th November 2017, to pay mortgage and living expenses. With this financial worries, I could not concentrate on healing and recovering.
