The Hokitka Sound Shell

$110 of $10,000 goal
Given by 5 generous donors in around 12 months

We are raising funds to build the Hokitika Sound Shell. When built, it will be a stage on Hokitkas beachfront for the community to use.

West Coast

Hokitika is a small town on the West Coast of the South Island full of talent and potential. While there are many places to showcase that talent we are looking to build a communal hub to be shared by the residents of the West Coast. The Sound Shell will be completely community owned and operated and be avalible to anyone for use. It was desinged in a shell shape to reflect Hokitkas unique coastline A local resident proposed this idea, students from the University of Canturbury created the innovative design and now we are trying to bring it to life. We would like people to contribute funds towards the building of this as when it is completed, it will be open for everyone to use for free and we want this to be a completly community funded event.

We aim to have the Sound Shell built by 2021. If we exceed our goal, the excess money will be used to buy lighting and sound equipment for the Sound Shell so we wont have to borrow the equipment from the Hokitika Theaters, putting them out. If our goal is not met, the money will be put in a trust fund until we do meet our goal. If our current plan changes, we will notify the community and if the Sound Shell falls through, we would like to use the money to upgrade our local theaters current systems so that when a performace is produced in Hokitika, we can give our community the best possible experience.

Hokitika's mayor, Bruce Smith, had this to say in support of the Soundshell.

"This Soundshell Project was initiated by Brent Nicoll who wanted to do something for the town that has given him so much. He engaged the Sound Engineering Students at the School of Engineering at the University of Canterbury to evolve the concept. We are now at the beginning stages of making this project a reality.

Brent's vision is that this facilty will be a peoples project, for the use of all.

I fully support this process and the Soundshell project."

Use of funds

Our main goal is to build the Sound Shell. Any surplus money will go towards a lighting rig, sound system and anything else that would otherwise be borrowed from the various theatres in town.
