Fundraising for top surgery with Dr Alex Brown
Canterbury
Hi all, most of you who know me either know or have guessed; I may not have told you, because it’s not something that defines me (even making this page is uncomfortable for me), but I am transgender. For those who didn’t know; well there you go. Hopefully that doesn’t matter to you.
The reason I’ve made this page is because I need some help. I don’t want to go into a whole lot of detail, but one of the many (and one of the biggest) aspects of transitioning for trans people who are AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth) is getting top surgery. For me it is potentially the most important aspect of my transition. I feel as though this is the next big step in my life, and that I cannot begin the next chapter without getting this done.
Unfortunately, it is quite expensive. Our country has a long way to go in regards to publicly funding these surgeries; currently the waiting list is 2-50 years, and it’s a randomised raffle with 0 certainty. I can’t wait that long. I’ve already waited 5+ years, and it is negatively affecting my mental and physical wellbeing on a daily basis. Currently I have to wear binders when I can, which isn’t very often because they cause me pain and damage my ribs and shoulders/spine.
I’m going to get it done privately with Dr. Rita Yang, no matter how long it takes to raise the needed funds. I don’t have a set cost yet, but from what I’ve found online, the surgery costs between 16-20K. If I receive more donations than I need, I will be donating anything remaining to another trans man on this journey.
I’m not sure how well this will do, but any amount will help. Thank you in advance if you do help, you have no idea what this means to me.
