Save The Otago Peninsula (STOP) is seeking funding to reach a target of 3,000 trees planted this year to enhance the habitat of native fish

For just over 35 years, Save The Otago Peninsula (known as STOP) has been planting native trees. This year a second tributary has been fenced and our volunteers intend to plant a further 3,000 trees to add to the "Future Forest" in the Smiths Creek freshwater catchment on the Hereweka Harbour Cone Block. The aim of the planting is to enhance the habitat of the native fish in the creek by reducing pollution, providing shade, slowing erosion on the steep hillsides and of course offsetting our carbon footprint thereby hopefully slowing climate change. Unfortunately we have a shortfall in funding to meet this year's target.
About us
STOP is a community based environmental group actively undertaking habitat enhancement, advocacy and education for the unique biodiversity of the Otago Peninsula including organising practical opportunities to contribute by planting and maintaining trees.
Use of funds
The money will be spent on purchasing eco-sourced native trees from local suppliers.

Just over 3,000 trees got planted by the due date at the end of September 2022, with donations continuing to come in. Thank you for your assistance ensuring this happened. Here is a closeup of some of the seedlings with their weedmats and cages on the last day of planting. Now the volunteers are busy releasing plantings from previous years to ensure maximum survival rate.
