Can you help amplify voices with lived experience of our justice system?

Wellington

We know that storytelling has the power to inspire change. We also know that the voices of people directly affected by our justice system are largely missing from the mainstream conversation. That’s why we’ve been working on True Justice - a podcast to explore what justice could look like in Aotearoa. By handing a mic to people with lived experience of our justice system and amplifying their voices, we’ll all get the opportunity to hear valuable perspectives, learn new ideas, and grow together as a powerful force for change.

This 5-part podcast hosted by Tommy Doran and Ana Chaya-Scotney will foster a deeper understanding of the complexity of justice, and the many tangled intersections with insecure housing, poverty, mental illness and racism in Aotearoa. True Justice will highlight the alternative solutions that already exist, and explore what a decolonised, rehabilitative justice system can look like, if we choose it.

After many hours of interviews, we are now ready to enter final production. We believe this must be done to a high standard in order to honour those who have generously and bravely shared their stories with us, and to ensure their stories reach and impact as many listeners as possible. That’s why we’ve decided to engage a media production company and are asking for your support to make this possible.

About us

JustSpeak represents the youth and rangatahi voice in the criminal justice conversation and at the decision-making table. We encourage open-minded discussion based on evidence and research, and we prioritise listening to people with lived experience of the criminal justice system, as we believe those most affected know what would be most helpful to grow thriving communities.

Use of funds

These funds will cover about half of the cost for final interview editing, episode editing and sound design, across all 5 episodes. Our hope is to then find a match funder to then cover the rest.
