Tuition fees for PhD student undertaking a research on domestic violence among Indian immigrants.
Waikato
I want my research to contribute to policy changes with regards to Indian immigrant women who experience domestic violence in New Zealand. It will produce a better, in-depth understanding of numerous cultural and immigration-related issues. It will produce valuable insights into the dynamics of the Indian community in New Zealand. It will help in the development of culturally appropriate services.
My move to New Zealand gave me a new perspective on gender issues. Being able to experience a different level of communication and openness between couples, I realised how much I had uncritically accepted my own country's attitudes, where horrific violence and other forms of injustice against women were tolerated - almost expected. I was able to look at these with fresh eyes and was determined to be part of the change I wish to see in the people of my home country.
As a migrant who has experienced both cultures, I felt I had the skills to ask the right questions about the issues at hand. What are the challenges Indian women experience in the face of migration that make them more vulnerable to domestic violence? How does the experience of immigration change the understandings about domestic violence that Indian women and their families bring with them to New Zealand? As victims in a host country, do Indian women react to domestic violence differently from their sisters in India? Does the Indian immigrant community help or abandon these women?
After living in India for 27 years, my move to New Zealand came along with new, positive opportunities. However, migration can present significant challenges. My husband, son and I have found it financially difficult to cope with my tuition fees and visa renewal fees every year. My husband works in a power company and I do part time jobs. There are very limited scholarships available for international students which makes funding for tuition fees a challenge. I intend to spend the entire amount of funding towards my tuition fees for 2015. I aim to complete my thesis by June 2016.
I'm involved in this research because I am passionate about helping Indian immigrant women and children who experience domestic violence In New Zealand.
