We are NZ registered charity working with families living in poverty in Vietnam to ensure their children can receive an education.
Our Child Sponsorship program currently works to support 114 children. On Saturday (4 Nov), the area was in the direct path of Typhoon Damrey, a category 2 typhoon which has caused extensive damage to the area.
Our friends and families were without power or water for 3 days, but word has reached us that 'the majority of our families have severe damage to their homes' and some areas of the province will take 2 hours to return electricity.
What we know:
There is no electricity in central Nha Trang other than premises with back up generators - FIXED
The town's water supply is due to run out today, and those with water tanks have been told to preserve water - FIXED
27 people are dead with many more missing - NOW OVER 100 CONFIRMED DEAD
There are reports of over 40,000 homes with structural damage or roofs lifted off
We desperately want to support our families who barely survive day to day on low incomes and lack savings to repair their homes. Many families cook and sleep in small rooms with all children sleeping on the floor so without a roof they are exposed to the elements.
UPDATE as at 11 November:
- Approx 20 of our families have major damage to their home
- At least 1 house has been destroyed
- 3 families have minor damage
The team are meeting today (11 Nov) to plan next steps
We are a NZ registered charity who's mission is to help children living in poverty in Vietnam. Our key focus areas are education, healthcare, nutrition and ensuring children can live a happy childhood.
As soon as we know the number and extent of houses damaged, we will provide more information.
At this stage, we hope to use some of our funds reserved for emergencies to provide shelter, food and water. We will then estimate the costs to repair homes one by one.
