Valentin has been accepted for life-changing SDR surgery in America that will give him the opportunity to walk alone and have a better life.
Auckland
Hello everyone,
Our son Valentin was born two months premature on May 26, 2006, after a particularly difficult pregnancy. He is a surviving twin. Soon after we welcomed him into our home and our lives he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy is a condition that affects muscle control and movement. The spasticity means Valentin's muscle tone is tight and stiff, causing a decrease in range of movement, and also causes pain. As Valentin grows his muscles becoming tighter, making walking more and more difficult and this condition affects both his sleep and his psyche. We have been to many countries, medical centers around the world for treatment, operations, physiotherapy for which we have relied on our own funds.
We are therefore extremely fortunate that world-renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. T.S. Park of St. Louis Children’s Hospital has accepted Valentin’s case for a life-changing surgery called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (which he helped pioneer) and believes that he is an ideal candidate. SDR is a surgical procedure that involves dividing and cutting some of the nerves in the spinal cord that contribute to spasticity in the lower limbs and can permanently relieve some of the spasticity in the legs of kids with cerebral palsy. This operation is available in the USA, but nobody in New Zealand offers it yet.
I am indignant at the fact that no country supports this type of surgery for thousands of children worldwide, which intervention has proven to have a beneficial effect on this disease. It is the first time I have to ask for help I am ashamed of the fact that for us and for many families, this amount is too high and we need to seek financial support so our children can be happy again. We will also be able to raise a certain amount after the sale of what we have, but it will not be enough. For this, I ask you, good people, help us as much as you can so we can raise these funds and help Valentine walk again and bring the smile back to his face. If we raise more money, I will donate them for the treatment of other children, which we have done many times before.
For this, we need donations worth $ 150,000 for the SDR operation, Orthopedic Surgery that he will also require, and then for the ongoing intensive physiotherapy that Valentin would need.
We aim to fund as much as we can ourselves but we need your help the amount is too big for the family.
Despite all the surgeries, botox injections and therapies Valentin has been thru, he is always with a smile on his face, working hard at school and doing his daily exercises to keep as much movement as he can for as long as he can. But the p predictions are that he will soon be sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Please help us get the SDR operation he needs to keep him walking for many years to come.
Any help at all would be hugely appreciated.
