WALK & TALK TE REO
My name is Teresa, I am walking the South Island Te Araroa trail, raising funds for Te Kopae Reo o Tupoho.

Enthusiasts, lovers, learners of te reo Māori aswell as children and babies in Te Waka-o-Māui (the South Island) this summer, Nau mai, haere mai to walk along side me and kōrero Māori arā ‘WALK & TALK TE REO’’. I love the language and would love to hear how your day is going as I pass through the many towns and communities that link together the Te Araroa trails.
I am walking the length of the South Island along the Te Araroa trail from the 19th of January, raising funds for Te Kopae Reo o Tupoho. Te Kopae Reo o Tupoho is a Māori language immersion Early Childhood Education Centre in Whanganui in much need of more funding for essential resources. I would love to contribute more to this kaupapa that nurtures our tamariki, mokopuna. On a personal level this kaupapa has also helped support me and my learning through my first year of a Early Childhood Education Degree.
Te Araroa is New Zealand's longest trail, spanning the length of the country from Bluff to Cape Reinga. I am hoping to complete the South Island section from Bluff to Picton, over 1300km of walking and hopefully within 2 months.
I am self-funding my own travel meaning all funds raised here will go directly to Te Kopae Reo o Tupoho.

Ko Te Araroa te ara hīkoi roaroa ake o Aotearoa i torotoro ana Te Araroa i te whāroa o te motu mai Te Kārehu-a-Tamatea ki Te Rēinga. Ko te tūmanako ka oti au te wāhanga o Te Waipounamu mai Te Kārehu-a-Tamatea ki Waitohi, tata ana ki te 1300km te roa, ko te tūmanako hoki kia oti tēnei i ngā marama e rua.

My name is Teresa, I grew up in Waimate in the South Island, a small town off the main road between Dunedin and Christchurch. I didn't grow up with any te reo Māori but my father installed in me the importance of te reo Māori to him. He told me repeatedly before he passed a story of a kuia from Taranaki who had offered to teach him te reo Māori but at this time he didn't prioritise the time to sit down beside her and learn. Then he would tell me often with eyes watering "This is my regret in life".
It was some months after my fathers passing that te reo Mōari unexpectedly crossed my path in the form of a job offer. I was to help look after a kaumātua in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, he was from Te Aupōuri. I didn't ask to learn te reo nor did he offer to teach me, he kind of just walked and talked te reo from day one and without any thought I began utilising a little te reo Māori alongside him.
It was through this special connection that I found myself falling in love with the language and went on to study te reo Māori. I am thankful to great teachers and a supportive community and hope to give a little back through this kaupapa.
