Northland
"The night of the AMP Dynamic Award Scholarship awards evening sparked a connection between two incredible Northland women who are changing and impacting lives within our community and internationally. Ciaran Torrington, the 2016 Scholarship recipient from Kaitaia and Alison Davie the 2017 Scholarship runner up from Whangarei are off to New York in March to join other world leaders at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations in New York to fight for change."
Ciaran is a sexual abuse survivor who advocates for the rights of all victims and survivors. She has used her years of experience working with sexual abuse survivors within the community to develop grass root strategies that reduce harm to survivors and build social support that is essential to recovery.
At the annual conference for CSW in New Yorkl, Ciaran has been selected to present her theory and strategy titled Te Wairua O Tika – The Spirit Of Justice along with other leaders from the Kaitaia Community. The presentation will discuss the negative impact of sexual harm on poverty, health, education, leadership and position of women in society; the importance in creating a supportive net, using collective impact and social enterprise to create change from within; and the goals and objectives of Indigo House - Te Wairua O Tika (the vehicle of which Ciaran's strategy is implemented), that contribute to the empowerment of sexual abuse survivors and challenge the inequities and discrimination that women face within the community.
Alison is a film director who uses her vast knowledge and creative passion to produce films designed to support and guide people through challenging scenarios. Alison will be filming the journey of Ciaran and other leaders in the community to New York with the outcome being a documentary based around survivors of sexual harm and their recovery.
