Help protect Wekaweka forever
112ha of amazing forest in the Wekaweka Valley in Northland is up for sale and this is our chance to buy and save it forever.

The Wekaweka Valley is part of the larger Waipoua Forest, home of Tane Mahuta and other magnificent kauri, kiwi and the endangered kokako. This 112ha block was farmed until about 1930 and it was selectively logged until the early 1950s but since then it has been left to regenerate. For the past 30 years, the owners have provided some protection, putting pest and weed control operations in place.
It's now up for sale and this is our chance to make sure that it remains protected and available for all New Zealanders to enjoy forever. We have a unique opportunity to purchase the property at less than market value but we need to act fast. And we need your help to do so.
Adam and Duane from the Awaroa Beach Campaign are showing their support for this appeal to raise funds and purchase land in the Wekaweka Valley.
With their support and yours, we'll purchase the property and turn it into a protected reserve. The forest will be able to continue to regenerate and grow and everyone will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy its ecological significance.
A gift of $100 would cover around 600 square metres and ensure that it is available for all New Zealanders to enjoy forever.
The Native Forest Restoration Trust (NFRT) was founded in 1980 to restore and protect our native forests. The Trust is a registered charity and since 1980 we have purchased over 7,000ha of native forest and wetlands throughout New Zealand. All our reserves are given permanent protection through a QE II National Trust covenant.

About us
The Native Forest Restoration Trust identifies native habitats that are under threat and acquires land of conservation value in order to protect it in perpetuity. We also involve volunteers in active restoration and preservation of this land, creating reserves which are open to the public.
Use of funds
We're fundraising for the Wekaweka project across lots of channels and we have already raised some of the funds, so that is why our target here is less than the full purchase and restoration price. Our first priority is to raise the purchase price to save Wekeweka forever, if we are lucky enough to raise a little extra that will go towards the initial cost of restoration and improving public access.

Thanks to all of the incredibly generous donors to the Wekaweka Valley campaign, we have raised the money we needed to purchase this area of significant natural heritage.
We’re now working with our solicitors to conclude the purchase and hope to take ownership within the next few weeks.
This has been one of the most successful public fundraising campaigns ever run by the Trust and it’s all down to the passion and generosity of Kiwis across the country who want to protect our natural heritage. The support has been incredible. Everyone at the Trust has been completely overwhelmed and we’re so grateful to have such passionate and committed supporters.
As with the other 7,000+ hectares of native forests and wetlands that we manage across New Zealand, the Wekaweka Valley property will be designated as a reserve and will be open for people to visit at any time. A covenant for permanent protection through the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust is placed on all of our reserves, keeping them safe forever.
The next step for us with the Wekaweka Valley property will be to put a management plan in place to make sure that the forest is able to continue to regenerate and that invasive pests, predators and weeds are controlled and kept out.
