DWC Westland Sports Hub is the facility to be developed at Westland High School including covered courts, gymnasium and pavilion upgrade.
West Coast
The need to upgrade the sport and community facilities at the school has existed for over a decade. The opportunity of $1.5 million MDI funding has created the catalyst for this to be undertaken and for the school and the Hokitika community to gain much needed quality facilities. The DWC Westland Sports Hub has also received a Lotteries Community Facilities Grant of $700,000.
The Gymnasium - It is intended to upgrade the ventilation, floor surface, heating, shower, change and storage coupled with general repairs and maintenance. A small reception area also proposed.
A Pavilion – The former music room is to be converted to a small modern sports pavilion. Opening out to the courts, it will contain a lounge, kitchen and servery, meeting and control room, toilets and storage.
Sports Fields – If funding exists, or as a future Stage 2 project, the school fields are proposed to be upgraded with a major drainage development and lighting added to enable evening use.
Project Benefits – This project is a major generational upgrade of sporting facilities in Hokitika, many of which also service wider Westland. The codes to directly benefit include basketball, badminton, volleyball, korfball, netball and tennis. Rugby, league, soccer and athletics are also likely to benefit if through training on the covered courts and if the field upgrade is also achieved.
Estimated Project Cost - Current estimates have the total project within the vicinity of $3 million dollars.
