Asking for help to buy Rhys a specialised wheelchair for school.
Tauranga, Bay Of Plenty
Rhys is our incredible 5 year old boy, He has degenerative congenital myopathy, a deteriorating muscle disease.
We are raising funds to buy him a specialised wheelchair that will cater to his needs, we are desperate so he can be happy, safe & learn with his friends.
The chair will have things he needs like head support, tilting feature & back support but comes at an insane 15k price.
Rhys cried to me recently as he doesn't understand why his body won't keep up, he battles horrible fatigue, all his muscles are weak & don’t contract correctly causing him to struggle holding his head up at times. His joints over extend meaning standing is much harder & his legs/arms give out randomly. He’s so tired most days he can't swallow/chew food, so he has his dinner via his ‘tubey’.
Rhys has had a significant deterioration in mobility, falls are constant & causing injury & now various medical professionals plus his teams at Starship & Tga hospital recommend a wheelchair as a preventive. We are currently hiring one in hopes it will help but it's not something we can do long term & it doesn't cater to all his needs. Rhys is going to school 2 hrs a day & has a teacher aide but only attends 3-4 days due to being unable to stand/walk.
A wheelchair will be such a blessing in so many ways, please read my blog https://rhiannonardern.wixsite.com/website to learn more about our journey. We never thought we would need help to provide something that Rhys needs so can't thank you enough for your support!

To buy a folding wheelchair with extra attachments so Rhys can attend school with his friends and go on outings with his family in the community.
Market Days and Winter Bugs 15 July 2022
We have been rather quiet lately as Rhys was hit rather hard with the winter bugs, he is all better now but it was rough and we defiantly noticed it was harder for him to bounce back this winter.
We also joined the Papamoa Markets and did a family stall a few weeks ago!! We offered face painting and a sausage sizzle (sausages kindly donated by Kiwi Fresh Meats) which was an awesome day and raised more money to go towards his new wheels!
We have some VERY exciting news! We been told once we have the base chair and head rest we will be able to get the any other attachments Rhys needs through his OT! So with everyone's donations, the market money and our personal savings we are only $1400 off!!! We are soooooo excited and so incredibly grateful for everyone's help to get this far!!!
