Wills is a 14 year old boy who just wants to get back to being a typical teenager. Lets get him through his second bone marrow transplant.
Nationwide
In December 2018, Wills suffered several bleeding noses. After conulting the family GP, who requested blood tests as a precaution, resulted in the blood tests coming back as abnormal. Initial talks with paediatrician pointed to Luekemia and Wills was referred to Christchurch (Child Haematology & Oncology '(CHOC)' for a bone marrow biopsy.
Results showed it was not Luekemia but a rare and serious blood disorder called severe Aplastic Anemia - a Bone Marrow Transplant is a life saving cure.
On the 7th November2019, Wills along with his mother Sandra and father Russell were transferred to Starship hospital for 12 days of chemo followed by a bone marrow transplant on 21 November.
Unfortunately, it was confirmed on the 14th January that the Bone Marrow Transplant has rejected, as Wills bloods were dropping consistently. This being the case, Wills will now have to undergo a second round of high dose chemo starting 30th January, with a second Bone Marrow Transplant on 6th February.
I am a family friend of the Duthie's and one of the founders of The Chemo Crazies Charitable Trust who provide distraction packs to children going through Cancer.
Funds rasied will be used to ease the strain of living expenses for the family over the next few months and going forward.
Life Post Transplant 18 July 2020
Hi everyone
We just wanted to update you all almost 6 months post transplant. Wills is looking and feeling really well. Whilst there will always be challenges along the way for right here and now things are going good. We have monthly check ups in Auckland and he is very well managed by the wonderful team up there and down here in Invercargill. He has started back at school for one hour a day and going to be increasing that as he feels better and able to cope with the fatigue. Moving forward the biggest focus will always be on Wills health and for now we are appreciating each day as it comes. A huge thank you yet again for everyone that has supported us, your love and kindness over the past eighteen months has meant the world to Wills and we as a family could not have done it without you.
