Help our young people - this years "Word - The Front Line" Champions from Dilworth School represent Aotearoa youth voices in Melbourne!

Auckland

Dilworth are the official 2017 Word - The Front Line Champions! This year over 220 poets from 44 high school teams participated in Word - The Front Line, making it the largest Youth Poetry Slam in Aotearoa. Now, we are taking the movement across the Tasman!

Jayden Osbourne, Phillip Toriente, Nathan Su’a and Jai Selkirk, Henceforth referred to as “The Boys”, have been invited to participate in first ever Upside Down Youth Poetry Conference which will take place in Melbourne on Dec. 4th. The event will connect young artists and leaders from all over Victoria for a solid day of workshops, panels and performances.

As part of the trip, the Boys will also be representing New Zealand in the second annual Trans-Tasman youth poetry slam.

In addition, the Boys have been invited to perform at the prestigious Melbourne Spoken Word Prize, one of the largest slams in the Southern Hemisphere.

Action Education's involvement (page creator)

Word - The Front Line (facilitated and hosted by Action Education) engages our community with Spoken Word through the voices of our own young people. To build stronger communities, we need to bridge the divide between generations, and communication is a key factor in this. Word - The Front Line attracts the young and old to a stage where this powerful dialogue of connection begins. A stage where young people courageously confront their truth and share their journey in the creative expression of spoken word poetry.

Action Education and supporters of the Dilworth Team would love to see these young leaders go to Melbourne.

This trip is an actual once in a lifetime opportunity for these poets to rep their school and country while connecting with other young people through the art of Spoken Word.

With your help we can make it happen.

About us

For more than 40 years our programmes have engaged, nurtured, and inspired rangatahi. They have given rangatahi space to reflect, connect and grow. We use Spoken Word Poetry as our vehicle of engagement because of its power in its accessibility and directness - and - it belongs to anyone and everyone who is willing to tell their story. Through story telling we’ve found that it breaks down stereotypes, builds community connection and resilience within individuals and groups.

Use of funds

The funds we are seeking through this campaign will help to cover costs for the trip including flights, food, accommodation and transport for the team and their mentors.

The performances opportunities, friendships and skills that the Boys will gain from this experience are invaluable. It will give them the opportunity to not only grow themselves but to also bring the knowledge back home to inspire the next generation.
