Help Brianna and Harry get to California

Auckland

Since 1969 senior lifeguards have been selected from clubs in Northern Region to visit lifeguard agencies in California.Through the host organisation, the California Surf Life Saving Association, exchange delegates travel to California for 6 weeks on a structured learning experience and are given the opportunity to participate in patrolling activities, use different rescue equipment and observe alternative beach management programmes and administrative structures.

This year Brianna Gleeson of United North Piha Lifeguard Service and Harry Mellor Red Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, have been selected as the exchange delegates. Each of them will use their time in California to research an aspect of surf lifesaving that they are passionate about, and use what they learn to benefit surf lifesaving back home.

While the impact this programme has in ensuring our organisation continues to provide the best service possible to the New Zealand public is immeasurable, it does come at a cost. Flights, accommodation, insurance and other expenses typically mean the Exchange costs around $15,000. While the programme is partially funded by the Buddy Lucas Leadership Programme, they are dependent upon fundraising and sponsorship for the remaining amount.

About us

The United North Piha Lifeguard Service Inc. and Red Beach SLSC are a dedicated group of volunteer lifeguards who keep our community and visitors safe on the beach. We also develop junior guards (ages 7 - 14) with skills to become confident in the surf.

Use of funds

The funds raised will go towards flight costs, travel expenses, living costs, accommodation, as well as T-shirts and gratitude plaques for our Californian hosts.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
