The 2020 Purple Push-up Challenge aims to generate awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease throughout the month of May.
Wellington
Hi everyone my name is Rhys and I have Crohn’s Disease which is a chronic bowel disease that can occur anywhere in the digestive tract but awareness around the disease is still pretty sparse.
Well, the month of May is nearly upon us which means others like me who fight Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis will be celebrating World IBD Day on the 19th. This is where we create awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease by sharing stories of our journey so others can have a better understanding of our daily fight.
Recently, I was inspired to generate awareness for the whole month of May so I have challenged myself to do 31 Purple Push-ups every day throughout the month. Purple Push-ups are where I don the colour purple while doing my 31 push-ups.
My aim is to fundraise $500 for Crohn’s and Colitis NZ (https://crohnsandcolitis.org.nz) who have done a lot for the IBD Community in New Zealand including setting up support groups and Camp Purple Live where they help kids with IBD get into the outdoors and just have fun.
To keep myself accountable I’ll be going Live every day on my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/crohnsmavrick/) to complete my 31 Purple Push-ups and while I’m there you can join me in my challenge or maybe you want to know more about IBD, I’ll be happy to answer any questions. If Push-ups aren’t your thing then maybe you could start your own Purple challenge, tag me it in, I’ll be really interested to see what you came up with.
I understand it’s a difficult time for the world right now with the continued fight against Covid-19 but any and all support on this challenge is very much appreciated.
The challenge begins on May 1st, I hope to see you there. Until then, keep up the good fight, peace.

Day 15 - IBD Timing + Slight Mental Breakdown 16 May 2020
I was going to cut this video up then post it but I chose to keep it raw, to show how foggy your thinking can get when dealing with Crohn’s. Enjoy 😊
Seriously though, I’m so proud that I’ve made it to day 15. I’ve received so much amazing feedback and that was my goal, to start a conversation and spread awareness about IBD. I’m so excited to see how much further I can take this 🤩
