A shave for invisible illness

We face an epidemic of suicide in New Zealand. Four years ago I shaved my hair for cancer; now, I'm shaving for mental illness.

Otago

In year 12, I raised money for the Cancer Society - with the help of some incredible people - by shaving off my hair. It was an amazing experience and I'm so glad that I did it.

About four years later, my hair has grown back past my shoulders and I'm enjoying it. However, 'Shave for a Cure' is rolling around soon and it sparked an idea. Last time I fundraised for physical illness; what about mental illness? In no way am I diminishing the battle with cancer; I am simply protesting against the disproportionate funding in mental health, and seeking for mental and physical health to be given an even playing field.

So I'm doing it again. This time, the funds are going to suicide prevention. We are facing an epidemic of mental health issues and suicide, and I believe that not only do we need to be having these conversations, but we need to be funding the appropriate resources. According to 2012 statistics, New Zealand has the highest rate of youth suicide in the OECD.

That's not okay.

In a few weeks my hair will be shaved off in the Octagon (Dunedin). If you'd like to donate, everything will go to Lifeline. I realise this isn't an option for some, and regardless of what you do or don't donate - please reach out. Please talk, however hard it is, or be the one who listens. Because I promise you that it makes a world of difference.

Thank you all.

Emily Markman's involvement (page creator)

Personally, I've been affected by mental health issues, as have some of those I love. This isn't about me, though. This is about us, as a community.

This is about confronting the tragic statistics which are released every year. This is about those who take their lives and the huge ripple effect it has. While I fully realise that not all sufferers of mental illness are suicidal, this is about the 1 in 6 or so New Zealanders who live with mental illness. This is about those who know and love them.
