Wanting to free fall for a greater cause than myself.
Auckland
We as Kiwi’s need to change our perspective on counselling and mental health.
Expressing our emotions or concerns is a foreign concept to our culture of "just get on with it". Don’t get me wrong, I love our culture and how diverse it is. When we get knocked down, we always get back up and power through. But we aren’t all wired/made the same.
Some of us see it as a sign of weakness opening up about situations. Therefore letting the problem manifest or turning to alternatives for handling the problem.
Personally I believe this is why we have such high rates of suicide (especially in males), drug and alcohol abuse/addiction and minor crime convictions.
Majority of us have that one person who has made a positive change in our lives. Whether it was a family member, friend, priest, coach, teacher, mentor, colleague or even a stranger…. The list could go on, but you get the point.
This is what these people do daily, supporting and helping families and individuals. They might even be THE person who prevents a Kiwi from self-harm, drug or alcohol abuse/addiction or minor crimes.
Home and Family Counselling is a charity that provides donation-based affordable professional counselling services for children, families, couples and youths. We have been serving Auckland since 1893 and are the second oldest charity in New Zealand
