Two best mates are attempting to run a 102km ultramarathon to raise money for Breast Cancer NZ and The Mental Health Foundation.
Auckland
We are two best mates wanting to raise money for two important causes, which are The Breast Cancer Foundation & The Mental Health Foundation.
The "Best Mates Challenge" grew out of a conversation between two best mates (go-figure) back in April of 2020. What started with a conversation around training for a marathon together soon grew into something much bigger. A 102km ultramarathon and at the same time raise money and give back.
Over the years Barney and Mal have been on many adventures in the outdoors together but have attempted nothing as challenging as this as a one off event.
Why these Charities?
Breast Cancer Foundation
Breast Cancer is the number 1 cancer in women in NZ. 9 women are diagnosed a day in NZ and around 3300 women are diagnosed every year. We lose 600+ people to this cancer every year. With increased awareness and more screening available the survival rate is significantly higher.
Mental Health Foundation
It’s been a difficult year for many Kiwis and as a result many people are in need of mental health support. Mental health struggles are extremely common and are continuing to rise. According to the Mental Health Foundation 1 in 5 Kiwis will face a mental health challenge this year alone and 1 in 2 Kiwis will face mental health challenges in their lifetime. That could be ourselves or a loved one.
