Raise money to help prevent depression and suicide
Bay of Plenty
Please spend a moment reading this, and if you can, help.
Surf lifesaving is all about pulling people back when they get out of their depth.
Young men across New Zealand seem to be getting way out of their depth and we can’t seem to figure out how to drag them back in before it’s too late.
A month ago, I flew home from overseas to bury my First Cousin. We had been working hard to help him, but neither I, nor anyone else, could stop my good friend Tom Keefe deciding to leave this plane, and us, behind.
The Mount Monster is the event of the year for Mount Surf Club. It consists of a 12km Ski, 6km Board Paddle, 5km Run and a 2km Swim race.
Three weeks ago, I qualified as a lifeguard. Since then I have done ten runs, seven swims, six ski trainings, and three board paddles. I am not an athlete, particularly an ocean athlete, or fit man.
Since Tom left us I have been spinning a little bit in my head about why and wherefores. Seems to me the best thing to do is try contribute to it not happening again.
I am going to Compete in the Mount Monster this year and try raise funds for Mike King and his mates.
When I say compete; I mean I will finish it before everyone gives up and goes home - leaving me out there to the Bronzies.
Anyway. I am hoping some of you good men and women can get behind this effort of mine, and put some money on the line. I will take it as a commitment to not give up, no matter how impossible and miserable the task on the day may seem.
I have started a give a little page with the link below. Any messages of abuse or threats in even of DQ/DNF welcomed.
Please help contribute to stopping good, smart young men like Tom Keefe leaving us behind.
I’ve started things off with $500
Sincerely.
Scott Reardon
