Medical Students Support KidsCan to Challenge Child Poverty
295,000 Kiwi kids live in hardship, and it’s not their fault. Together, we can solve this problem.

> KidsCan does amazing work to support our most vulnerable children. Their focus is on providing the basics, so that all children in New Zealand on the belief that education equals opportunity, and every child, regardless of their social economic background, should have an equal chance.
WHAT and WHEN?
17th till 23rd July
> Monday 17th July Bake Sale Christchurch Hospital
> White Elephant Trust, 442 Tuam St, 5.30pm Wednesday 19 July - Political discussion panel
> Friday 21st Bake sale Dunedin School of Medicine
> Sunday 23rd July Ice Skating Cathedral Square
Throughout the week we will have collection buckets at the Christchurch Medical School and at all of our events.
We are also going to be promoting long term initiatives that students and community members can be a part of to challenge this issue. Whether that is through donations (KidsCan, fill my lunch box) or volunteering time (Pillars, Big Brothers Big Sisters, I Have a Dream).
We aim to provide direction and motivation for community members to be able to engage with local support initiatives. As we believe a sustainable way to move forward involves engaging our community to support one another.

PIHPSA is the lead student organisation behind the fundraising initiatives and we have teamed up with Medical Student Associations across the country, including NZMSA, CMSA, MSGA and Te Oranga as well as a local Pacific organisation PYLAT to challenge the issue of child poverty.
We acknowledge that child poverty is a New Zealand issue, sadly though there exists a disproportional burden of poverty that is experienced by Pacific communities in New Zealand. This has spurned our passion to challenge this issue and support the amazing work being done by KidsCan.
KidsCan helps Kiwi kids become more engaged in their education so they can have a better chance of reaching their full potential by providing:
• Food at school
• Adequate clothing
• Basic health and hygiene products

'Things are pretty bad for families' - KidsCan charity unable to keep up with massive demand 10 July 2017
More than 4,000 Kiwi kids are in urgent need of food, clothing and basic health products from the charity KidsCan.
It's the highest wait list the organisation has had since they launched in 2005 and they can't keep up with the growing demand.
