An ex-patient, determined to run an ironman 70.3, so that others may receive the second chance I did.
Canterbury
I myself am here today because of this service. It is the reason I am able to walk. It's the reason why my family hasn't buried a son, a brother. I want to make sure that this service is around for a long time, to ensure that others can be saved, that other families can remain together.
I shattered my left leg, right foot, vertebrae in my back and broke my pelvis in multiple places. I was told I'd never move my legs again. Today, I have multiple fused vertebrae in my back and my legs are largely paralysed. My left ankle joint has been pieced together and has very limited movement. Part of my right ankle joint is fused which has resulted in the fixation of my toes. Walking itself is painful, running any distance is nearing impossible. But I want others to have the chance I have. I want others to survive, to walk again. And so I'm going to attempt to race a half-ironman - to show the service how grateful I am, and to raise awareness and money so that others may have another chance at life. Odds are you know someone who has been rescued by the service, or you will within your lifetime. Let's ensure this service is available for them, and give them the second chance I was given.
The service is underfunded by a staggering $23,000 a day, please join me and donate, let's make a difference.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is a lifeline. It's what you hope you never need, but if you do, it's your final chance.
Complete! 25 January 2021
The ankle didn't survive much of the run but that's what crutches are for! It took a long time but I'm happy to say that I got across the line!
I can't thank all of you enough for your generous support! It means so much to me and helped me to keep pushing on race day. Much love to you all, Matt
