We are a group of ākonga/ learners from Rototuna Senior High School seeking support in an event we are hosting called 'Hoops for Hope'
Rototuna, Hamilton
We are organising an event at our kura/school on the 24th-25th August 2022 called 'Hoops for Hope'- a 24 hours free-throw competition.
The event will involve 48 high school tauira/ students who will get sponsored to shoot free throws for 30min each (collectively this event will run for 24hours).
Our reason for choosing free throws is we believe in the health enhancing interconnection of physical health on mental health. Free throws are also completed in isolation and are considered the easiest shot in basketball ... or are they? A missed free throw can win or lose a game, yet many players don’t work hard enough to improve them. The same can be said for our mental health and teens. Sadly social isolation can also increase our risk of experiencing mental health issues such as depression, social anxiety and low self-esteem. Feeling socially isolated occurs when the young are not connected into their communities in a meaningful way.
Money raised at the event will be donated to I AM HOPE who aim to promote positive attitudinal societal change around mental health throughout New Zealand, and fund private care and counselling for young people stuck-in-the-mud on waiting lists.
