Running my first marathon! Donating all proceeds to Alzheimers New Zealand
Nationwide
As my final school year started I knew I wanted to challenge myself. Running a full marathon seemed like the perfect challenge. While running a Marathon completes a year-long project at my school, there is also a community module I need to do. Therefore I decided to run for a cause, with a personal and meaningful connection.
My Grandad has lived with dementia for the past 7 years. Dementia has robbed Grandad of his personality and his memories. This was not an easy thing for my family or Grandad (Brian) himself as he was a sociable man with a big laugh and strange sandwich fillings!
By running for Alzheimers NZ, I would be giving back to a community that helped our family, and continues to look after and support families all around New Zealand.
I'm very proud to say I'm dedicating my first marathon ever to my Grandad and Alzheimers NZ.
Alzheimers New Zealand is working towards a dementia-friendly New Zealand, creating a national culture of understanding and helping to inform and strengthen the health system to meet this challenge. They also provide education and resources for research, prevention and support for those living with dementia. All of this costs money of course so fundraising efforts are so important in helping them continue this vital work.
As my family has experienced dementia on a personal level, I am motivated to give to Alzheimers NZ so they can continue their good work.
