NZ 24 hour running champion Andrew Glennie is raising funds for the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital by shaving his beard on the 9th of February.
Nationwide
Up to 80% of the native species in New Zealand are now under threat of extinction, and while there are many great initiatives to reduce predators and increase safe havens for these animals, there is a pressing need to save every single one we can – right now. As habitats are slowly recovered, we need to make sure the animals are still in existence to populate them.
The Dunedin Wildlife Hospital is opening this month and will be crucial in the survival of some of the most unique and most threatened species. Some 500 animals a year will be treated from right across the region, including a wide range of native birds, penguins, seals and sea lions.
Without the hospital, sick or injured animals that aren't endangered are left to fight for themselves, or they're euthanised. Endangered species are flown to the North Island for treatment. A quick, local response will maximise their chances of survival.
I'm inspired by those who give wildlife a helping hand.
