Help Carers NZ keep its wellbeing resources free for carers, and follow New Zealand carers on their Walk for Wellbeing during May!

Auckland

If life took a turn for the worse, who would go to the end of the world and back again for you?

Almost half a million Kiwis care for loved ones who have a disability or serious condition. Most juggle paid work and family life with caring, but often carers forget to look after themselves.

To raise awareness of the importance of self-care so they can 'go the distance', Carers NZ is taking a group of carers on a once in a lifetime walk from Portugal to Finisterre in Spain, once known as the end of the world. We will document the journey and share it with our supporters so you can all be with us in spirit!

Two thirds of carers experience depression, and many are injured while supporting others. Our wellbeing resources include strength-building exercise programmes, meditations, a Time Out planning guide, helpful info packs, emergency planning tools, Family Care magazine, and more!

You'll find information about them all, and about our Walk for Wellbeing, at www.carers.net.nz

Each day of the 240 kilometre walk we'll be promoting Carers NZ's resources and programmes, to remind carers back home that to keep supporting others, they need to look after themselves, too. We'll be encouraging them to plan 30 minutes of time out each day of our journey ... so they can get in the habit of regular breaks to help them stay well.

We'd love your support to help make this trip the magical experience these extraordinary Kiwis deserve. Funds will go towards trip expenses and ensuring that the support, information and resources we provide for carers remains free.

The walk takes place from May 2 -16. We'll be filming the walk for a documentary to raise awareness of carers and their important role in family life and society.

At Finisterre, on 15 May, we'll release heart-shaped 'flying lanterns', attaching messages submitted by carers: their hopes, wishes, memories, tributes to loved ones who've passed away, and dreams. If you would like us to release your own message at the end of the world, email it to us: centre@carers.net.nz

Find out more and follow our journey at our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/carersnz and through our website: www.carers.net.nz

First message received for our flying lanterns!  14 April 2016

Posted by: Carers NZ

You can send a message for carers doing the camino walk to Finisterre to attach to one of our lanterns to release on 15 May ... it's free and easy, just email the message to centre@carers.net.nz We'll film the release and share it after the 15th. Your message can be about a caring experience, someone in your life who has cared for you or who you cared for ... it can be a wish, a dream, a hope, a memory, a tribute to someone who has passed on. It can be whatever you want to release into the sky over Finisterre, 'the end of the world' where so many people finish their pilgrimages through Spain's 'field of stars'. You do not need to put your name on your message unless you want to :) We need all messages by 13 May.
