I'm running the Christchurch Half Marathon on the 4th of June to raise money for the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust.

I'm running in the Christchurch Half Marathon on the 4th of June to raise money for the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust, which is an associate charity of the NZ Multiple Sclerosis Society, who support individuals diagnosed with MS.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the nervous system, where the nerves of the spinal chord and brain are damaged. The disease has a range of different symptoms that effects everyone differently, and generally affects the eyes and muscles, reducing mobility and coordination.

No one knows currently what causes MS, and there is no known cure. There are medications available that can help manage the symptoms but they have some undesirable side effects. This is why continued research into MS is so important.

My mother was diagnosed with MS when she was pregnant with me, approximately 28 years ago. She has a progressive form of MS, which means the symptoms progressively get worse over time. To put that into context, my earliest memories of Mum she was able to walk unassisted, but could not run. Due to an accident which broke her leg approximately 12 months ago, she now cannot walk unassisted.

She has never let MS get in her way of living life to the fullest however, and with my Dad has provided me and my sister with a completely normal up-bringing. The MS Society have offered a tremendous amount of support to my mother and our family over the years, so this is my opportunity to try to give back.
