0800 Hungry is a lifeline for those most vulnerable in the Canterbury community. One food parcel can feed an entire family for a week. When we hit bumps in the road our no-questions-asked service does not discriminate. 0800 Hungry delivers directly to homes and also provides food to over 145 churches and agencies. Almost 40% of our 120 volunteer base have a disability and for them, 0800 Hungry means the world. Our volunteers enjoy being commitmented knowing that it is a blessing to others.

Each month 0800 Hungry faces challenges in meeting their ever increasing operating costs, and without an increased stream of income 0800 Hungry struggle to meet their monthly commitments. In an effort to destroy the social stigma surrounding foodbanks, 0800 HUNGRY MINISTRIES TRUST established and operates a food warehouse. By following a God given plan, we believe that we can reach countless individuals and families who through fear, embarrassment, sense of failure, or just plain personal circumstances, cannot or will not seek help.

As most of us are aware, hunger can strike as suddenly as an illness and if left untreated it can destroy the fabric of a home. It's quite often short term and can be caused anywhere from redundancies to ill health. But hunger is preventable and there is a cure.

There are two major facts about hunger that need to be recognised:

The first is that hunger is like an iceberg, there is always considerably more concealed than there is visible.

The second is that hunger is a reality; it has no favourites, takes no holidays and cuts through every boundary of age, race, religion, and gender.

Worldwide research recognises that it is the health of our children that suffers most when food is short. Research has also proven that children who have sufficient to eat are more likely to reach their potential at school and mature into productive adults, adults who are more able to contribute to society instead of the reverse.
