Bushy Park Sanctuary

Bushy Park Tarapuruhi is a mainland island predator-fenced forest sanctuary protecting one of the few remaining areas of mature North Island lowland forest. The name Tarapuruhi means "place of abundant bird life". Gifted to Forest and Bird in 1962 by the owner G F Moore, today the sanctuary is cared for by the Bushy Park Trust, in partnership with Forest and Bird (*this is a Forest and Bird Project), along with close collaboration with the local iwi Te Kaahui o Rauru and support from Horizons Regional Council and DOC.

This is a long-standing community -led conservation project to protect the forest ecosystem. Pest mammals, except for mice, were removed from the sanctuary in 2005 following the construction of a 4.8km XcluderTM pest fence and an eradication project.

Today the 98-hectare sanctuary is a haven for endangered wildlife, with successful reintroductions of toutouwai (North Island robin), tīeke (saddleback) and hihi (stitchbird).

Massive volunteer support ensures the continued protection and care for the sanctuary.
